2014 reflections

2014.

It's been a sort of adventure time for me.

First time I spend more than a year outside West Malaysia. In the familiar shores of Kota Kinabalu. I must admit I think I settled down quite well, partly thanks to a lot of familiar faces here.. from friends to pastors.

I spend most of time studying for my theological training...that's why I am being send here and meanwhile for the weekend, I am serving at All Saints cathedral.

That being clarified, studies so far have been challenging but thanks to the grace of God, so far my studies have been good. Results, most of the time, were encouraging and it really caught me off guard. I admit sometimes I never thought I will do that well. Really praise God and that will encourage me to study hard and do well.

I said it before so I say again -- never thought within a year, I finished so much theological paper.

Next year, more to come. Hope all will turn out well.

Ministry side, it's not surprising to say it's busy. Week in week out, the peak will be when Diocese host events at Cathedral. Like prayer conference and EHS conference. Even though can be tiring, again God's grace always sustained me and I learn a lot from these experiences. Being blessed through it even as I serve God.

My album/music side... well...yes, pretty quiet except an online EP release by me.

I decided to stay low profile for some reasons --

1) focus and prioritized my energy on my studies and ministry first
2) Take some time to slow down and refocus my goals for the music side. See what direction to go.
3) Understand the life here, although it's quite straight forward

I know some may disagree with my points above but at some point, refocus is needed. Sometimes I came to a point where I did think about stopping entirely. I kept going back to reasons why I choose to embark on this album journey. It's tiring actually so I need to ask myself why I want to do it. That's why most artist would take time to refocus. It's good to slow down and not go head-on aimlessly. Most importantly, to know what you want to achieve.

Then, something happened this year which again lead me the question on what direction I want to achieve. The most dramatic thing ever happened to me for album/music side, which I kept quiet until now was actually I received a mail from producers of a certain TV show and asked me if I want to be part of this massive talent search around this region. Mind you, this show is well-known world-wide. The audition for this event, from what I read, attracted so many people to its audition. I actually received a so-called "1st round" bye to the next round of audition because the producers hand-picked me to be on the show BUT I still need to be "audited". I told them I can't fly over to KL due to commitments here, but I send them my audition video instead (since they asked, I find no harm just sending a video).

So with all that happens, that throws me into thinking mode about what I want and what I want to achieve. If you are in my shoes, you can imagine the dilemma I went through. It was quite tough for me although I already made up my mind at some point. The place where questions being raised by myself like "is it what I want?" "would this be a great opportunity?" "would I regret about missing it?"

I admit at that point, I don't think this "talent search" thingy is something I would want. Maybe if you asked me 5 years ago, I probably be more keen. Currently, life have changed, my season is pretty much very different right now and I think I managed better with the capacity I have right now, that is moving around the indie circuit. At some point, yes I want to see my songs out there but time will only tell.

But this incident gave me reasons to give thanks to God. Praise God that my music have captured some people's attention, praise God that I am able to see how He has used me.

That being said, I hope God will continue to use my talents and music to do great and mighty things, according to His timing and season.

I admit I miss performing in gigs and all. 2015 might see me stepping out a bit so let's see how it goes.

Aside that, 2014 sees a lot of interesting things around me...

Like how this country went through tough season. Keep it short, this country really need God.

MU.. transiting from that Moyes era to LVG reigns. LVG is bringing the goods so far, I am loving the form they have. Let's hope it ends with some trophies.

All in all, there are some achievements (big or small) that I am proud of and at the same time, there are some regrets. I won't be dwelling in those successes or regrets but I want to move on to 2015.

I believe it's exciting year yet. Yup, I need to echo the usual quote : "the best is yet to come..."

Hereby too, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to friends near and far, also asking your forgiveness for any shortcomings.

May you have an exciting and fruitful 2015.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2014

Although it's been said many times, many ways.. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all

Peace has come

Peace is not merely the absence of external trouble - it is the "presence of a Saviour" who cares about the human condition -- Brian Houston
a very appropriate Christmas article as we reflect on the peace that God has given to us. A peace that surpasses all understanding despite what is going on around us.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

in the chaos and confusion

Christmas is coming..

Beyond the bright lights of Christmas decorations and beautiful wrapped gifts, there's stress and tension around.

Recently the world was rocked by some terrorist attack at Australia and Pakistan. Closer to home, there are some who are still stoking racial and religious issues.

Let me take you back to the Bible. Put yourself in Joseph and Mary's position when they were about to receive Jesus into this world. So much chaos. So much stress.

Now take that position and compare to today's feeling.

I admit sometimes what I don't like about Christmas is the amount of stress I get into when preparing for Christmas event. Sometimes I am disappointed with the way things are done or said. Maybe sometimes, some things don't go according to plan.

I remember in 2009, when I was at FCC, the biggest headache I got that time was the church main projector malfunctioned. If you are in my position, I don't think you will enjoy the stress. I have to make so much calls and arrangement to get it fixed by Christmas.

In those midst of chaos, sometimes it's easy to get distracted and get grumpy like Scrooge about Christmas. It's not a pleasant feeling but sometimes I have to learn to get over with it.

Probably Joseph and Mary have that same feeling. Running away from people who trying to hunt them and cannot find a place for the family to settle down. But what we can learn from them is to stay faithful and trust in God.

Again, truth to be told, I am also disappointed at some people making funny statement about Malaysians celebrating Christmas. But remember, 2000 years ago, some people also make a big hoo-ha when they learnt a Saviour is coming.

Nothing is new under the sun but stay firm and let God's peace reign.

Feliz Navidad

look at the world

the great Swiss theologian Karl Barth said :-- ‘take your Bible and take your newspaper and read both. But interpret newspapers from your Bible.’

in short, learn to see the world through God's eyes. Then, you can understand why so many things happened in the world.

Then you know what to pray and intercede.

Then you learnt to stay strong in God.

Christmas countdown..

1 more month to Christmas...

Always love looking at Pavilion's christmas decoration, never fails to amaze me. Glad to take some pictures of it when i was at KL.

I pray that Christmas will be meaningful to us. All of us might be busy with Christmas preparation and also year-end work but remember that Christmas is all about Jesus' redemption work that brings us back to God, a message of peace and hope.

Welcome to the Advent season...

Yes, roll out all those Christmas songs...

beyond the stage

Something to share for you to think about. Something I hope we can see from another angle.

Very often the misconception about worship ministry is that it is a "glamorous" ministry.. or sometimes people misunderstand us as being a bunch of show-offs brats.

It's good that sometimes we need to look to the mirror and see whether what we been doing is glorifying God or not but let me throw some thoughts that you need the consider...

Many years I am involved in this ministry and I don't think it's "glamorous" as some think. In fact, there's so much hard work in this ministry.

Although a lot of people say this ministry is like a "forefront" ministry because the team is on-stage, in public view, many forget that the hard work is actually happening behind the scene.

1) Worship teams go through practices.
We don't just picked up instruments and play music. Talents doesn't jus come overnight. Musicians, singers, people involved spend minutes and hours to make sure the songs and music able to bring people into presence of God. In short, giving their best to the Lord.

2) Worship teams sacrifices
We sacrifices our time, energy, money on practices, travelling, buying own instruments.

Not just that, there's also HEART work involved -- that personal relationship with God is very important which comes with the desire and humbleness to serve Him.

What I want to say today is, if you see anyone in the worship team this weekend, thank them for their hard work, encourage them and give them constructive comments. They don't seek self glory. They seek God's glory.

On Sunday (26th October), it was children sunday.

With that in mind, the children joined me onstage to lead worship at 730am English service.

Beautiful experience and it reflects on the beautiful Bible verse in Psalms 8:2 -- "From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise.."

baby steps

(a morning reflection)

Baby steps is not just taking small steps, it's about stumbling and getting up to learn to walk again.

In life, as we learn to take baby steps in whatever we do, we will stumble but we need to learn to get up and walk.. eventually heading somewhere and growing.

sharing at ASC ENG youth

For past 2 weeks, I had the opportunity to share with English youth fellowship at All Saints KK about worship. It was an enriching experience to share what worship is.

I am still learning though about worship and preaching. Anyway, hopefully I have time to share my sermon points here.. and share more thoughts on worship in this blog. That's what this blog about, I admit busyness has kept me away from sharing. Learning to manage my time though.

Cheers. Have a wonderful weekend

"victory" by Hillsong college

VICTORY
Words and Music by Benjamin Hastings, Matthew Sztyk & Seth Simmons

Verse 1:
Born into the hands of sin
Crippled by the shame within
Broken heart and restless soul
I was lost out on the open road

Verse 2:
Beaten on that bloody day
On his back a world of pain
Clinging to that cursed tree
Jesus bled and died for me

Chorus:
Victory Victory
Conquered death
Set me free
Victory Victory
Jesus alive in me

Verse 3:
Three days on the stone gives way
Ain’t nothing but an empty grave
Gather all the sinners ‘round
Tell them what great love we’ve found
Tell them what great love we’ve found

Bridge:
Lead me to the water deep
In the gracious current I’ll sink
I will rise dead to my sin
Christ in me and I in Him

"When we come alive" by Switchfoot

gotta love Jon Foreman's song writing and his reflection.

Here's an article he wrote in reflect to one of Switchfoot's new single

++

"Life is a concept, not a reality." -- Ferris Jabr
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
What does it mean to be alive? Is it breath? Growth? A steady succession of thoughts, feelings or actions? Scientists have no definite answer to the question. They say life is a process, not just a specific collection of materials. Bacteria, plants and humans all demonstrate radically different ways of being alive. So the question comes back to you: How do you define life? In many ways, the answer will come to define you.
For me, there is a dramatic difference between thriving and just surviving: life abundant and mere existence. There have been low moments in my life when I felt like I was slowly dying, just wasting away. Yes I had a pulse, but my potential felt untapped. The struggle for beauty, strength and truth left dormant while I drifted into the grey, meaningless tedium of the clock. "That he not busy being born is busy dying."
These low moments contrast sharply with the times in life when I feel invigorated, fulfilled, and hopeful. These are the moments when I come alive. Think back to a moment in time when you felt more fully alive than ever. You feel a certain spark in the air, as if the sun has come out from behind the clouds and your heart is beating for the very first time. Think back to your first kiss, or the first day of school. Are your palms sweaty? Your body tense? Your eyes wide? The colors in the air are unlike anything you've ever seen?

I suppose what I'm talking about here is a qualitative element of living -- abundant life, not just a pulse. You'd think this higher quality of life would be found among the fortunate few -- the good looking, talented, folks with some cash to spend. Ironically, this abundance of life is rarely found in the places I would expect to find it. Laughter, joy, purpose, calling -- I tend to find it in unexpected places.
I think back to some of the most generous people I've ever met. I have found more often the poor are much more generous than the rich. And, the same with the healthy - two friends of mine with the best dispositions are fighting cancer. And the same goes with the perspective of the blind, or the wisdom of mentally handicapped, the courage of the weak.... the list goes on and on. My friend Jeremy doesn't have the use of his legs anymore and yet, his indomitable spirit refuses to quit. He surfs, he climbs mountains, he road-bikes - all without the use of his legs. Even in his wheelchair, my friend Jeremy has more mobility, traction, and drive than almost anyone I know. He lives life to the full: unencumbered with the obstacles and risks at hand.
Because life is a gamble. It's an enormous risk to enter into this world, to leave the womb and take a breath. But here we are -- the risk takers. The Living. The loving, risking, hopeful community of humans, breathing this air somewhere between the womb and the grave. We might have our eyes on the infinite, and yet we are bound to the present tense. Our lives are found only in this specific moment, only in this present passage of time. And in our mortality, we find that any of our greatest moments come only at a cost. There is risk involved. To love is to risk. To fight for what you believe in is a risk. To dare to change yourself or the world around you -- it requires a commitment beyond the risk.
Everyone has excuses, but I've found that my excuses make for lousy stories. My favorite stories to tell are the ones filled with both my bold failures and successes -- laughable attempts to get to places just beyond my reach. When we come alive we are stretched to become more than we were. When we come alive we are thankful for what we have. When we come alive we are bold in our love. When we come alive we gain a perspective that was lacking before. Because life is both a choice and a gift -- we seek after it and it comes to us.
The meaning of life... Maybe it varies for all of us. But if the meaning of life cannot be answered by the scientists or the philosophers, then it's up to the rest of us to define what it means to be alive. We, the living, answer that question every day -- not with our words, but with our lives. Let us show what life means to us with our actions. Dreaming and hoping and reaching forward - we live our lives in the present, wide-eyed and expectant. Is life a dream? If it is, it's a dream yet unrealized. The depths of this life have yet to be found. The highest peaks, the furthest reaches. Maybe abundant life has yet to happen. What does it look like when we come alive? Let's find out.

THIS ROAD's 5th ANNIVERSARY

It started off as a dream. Later on, it became a reality.

Sometimes it feels like yesterday. On 9th September 2009, I released my first album – THIS ROAD

As I was young and starting to indulge myself in song writing, the sense of doing an album dawns on me. It’s like my dream to do so, just that I am not sure in capacity.

Thanks to encouragement by friends and being inspired by many local artists’ adventure, I took the step of boldness to do my first album. Trusting it is all God’s plan, I embark on this journey, knowing it won’t be easy. That is why my first album is entitled THIS ROAD.

It’s been 5 years. I remembered the launch vividly. I never forget everyone who came, everyone who supported me, and everyone who encouraged me. Because of all of your little support, here I am writing this note of thanks. Because of all of you, there was a follow-up album – THE DAY AFTER (released in 2012), there’s tours, and seeing how the music reaching to people I myself haven’t met yet, impacting lives in one way or another. I am still amazed that even till today, some people still talk to me about the first album and how much it impacted them. Testimony like this really spurs me on and at the same time, acknowledging that indeed it’s the man upstairs who makes it all possible.

One of the many frequent questions I get for the past few years is will I released another album. Time can only tell. To be honest, I am not sure. But what is certain is I will still be doing music, in one way or another. It’s a passion that never dies.

That’s where this online EP comes in. To celebrate 5 years of the first album release and also a big thank you to all of your support throughout the years.

Here is the link : https://soundcloud.com/timlimproject/sets/tl-online-ep

This EP contains 5 songs – some songs you have heard before online and 2 new songs I wrote in recent years. I want to thank Lo Shi Seng and Bryan Limus for helping me out in making those songs becoming a reality. All the songs were recorded at Shi Seng’s humble recording studio and Bryan Limus helped in mastering some of the tracks.

As these song is on soundcloud, feel free to loop it as much as you can.If you want the songs as a mp3 and want to play them at your own convenient, you can email me at timlim1206@gmail.com or contact me then I will send you the songs. If you are convicted to buy these songs from me, well, just let me know. I have no fix price for my songs – you can buy these songs at any price. Basically my concept is like an “online tip jar”.. just tip if you love the songs.

I know some of you ask why I don’t sell it on itunes or spotify or something. It’s a long story to tell but at the end of the day, I guess the personal touch between me and you is vital for me, and I admit I have a niche market for these songs.

That aside, I hope you enjoy this online EP. I hope these songs will be a blessing to you, keeping you excited about what’s next. Most of all, it is to thank all of you. Yes, the online EP is dedicated to all of you.

Much love
