Hobbit lesson

I recently watched Hobbit and I can't help to share some lessons I learn from it. Yes, Tokkien might have some subtle Christian theme there but let me point a few from my perspective..

1) GOD CAN USE THE MEEK
Hobbits are small in size, gentle in their nature. With a large quest ahead, it seems that the right person in Gandalf's mind is Bilbo. Many cannot see the logic behind it.

When Gandalf was asked by Galadriel why he chose Bilbo, he said "“Simple acts of kindness and love keep dark things at bay… Perhaps it is because I am afraid, and he gives me courage"

It's amazing how simple things/people in life can make a huge difference. So never underestimate yourself. Never looked down on yourself.. who knows you can be a world-changer, someone who make a massive impact to this world.

It's true that it also says in the Bible :- "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." - Matthew 5:5

2) GOD WILL CHALLENGE US TO GO BEYOND OUR COMFORT ZONE
Bilbo always live a simple and happy life, in his own house and doesn't like people to bother him. Till Gandalf came and challenge him to follow him on an adventure. Not enough, Gandalf sets up a meeting at Bilbo's home.. much to Bilbo's annoyance. After much coaxing, Bilbo joined Gandalf and the Dwafts on their quest to reclaim their land.

It's a life lesson for some of us.. we are always comfortable with what we are doing. There will be times when God will challenge us to live a life that is beyond our comfort zone.

We can learn to put our faith and trust in God when we step out. Moreover, we have a God who is able!

3) GOLD/RICHES IS NOT EVERYTHING
The Dwarf king Thror has everything in his kingdom.. gold and jewelries.. so much that it drives him insane and greedy. Till Smaug the dragon came and wipe out everything.. including chasing the whole kingdom out. All of the sudden, the king has lost all his riches to the dragon who is actually as greedy as him.. choosing to dwell and bath in the riches of the king.

It just sad that it actually a true reflection of today's world. People are so into their riches that they don't care things around them and would do anything to get it.

4) DON'T BE CLINGY TO TEMPORARY THINGS
"my preccccioussss"... seems like a haunting but fun quote. But really, in our lives, we have lots of things that we called "my precccciousss". When Gollum/Smeagol lost his ring to Bilbo, he just went nuts. Searching hi and low for it. Crying and cursing, depress and heartbroken.
How clingy can we be to things of the world? I m not surprise sometimes seeing people get so depress when their priced procession is lost or taken away.

Personally, I recommend this movie.. one of the top movies of 2012. The movie might be 3 hours but if you able to survive it, it's awesome stuff.

And the movie makes me wanna rewatch LOTR trilogy all over again... hehehe

lessons of today

Today I did a bit of vocal training with my pastor's wife who is a well-trained vocal teacher.

Besides the vocal skills and technical skills, I was blessed that I also learnt some spiritual input to be a worship leader and worshiper of our mighty God.

A lot of things to digest but let me sum it up like this. Pursuing God's presence is a never ending journey. I do relished the challenge of seeing the worship level of myself, the ministry, the church, the nation, the world going a notch higher than what we are. Never settle for 2nd best. All for His glory.

"as the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you" - PSALMS 42:1

Lots to learn about worship and yes, I relished that challenge to do great things for God.

So.. yes.. that's one of my 2013 hope/resolution..

Christmas approaching soon..

I remembered my Friday dinner.. after watching Hobbit and looking to recommend Eric Fung to some porky burger, my gf asked me and Eric some very critical question..

"Why God allows evil?"

well.. I don't think she is the only person in the world asking that. In fact, everyone ask that.. right?

Critical questions like "is God actually that cruel to allow us humans to suffer?" "why didn't God destroy evil?"

Next day I wokeup in the morning, read the news online about the Connecticut shooting. I may be in Malaysia, but my heart just broke the moment I saw it. Not again America, not again world.

Past 24 hours been reading lots of articles posted by random people to news network to celebrities about what they think about it. I shall not add more what is out there.

One thing we need to remember why we are living in such fallen world. Because we humans sinned. Romans 3:23 says.. "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God".

So.. NO.. God is not evil or cruel to let us suffer or has prompt Satan to do nasty things to us.

But let me say there's reason why we have Christmas. There's reason why Jesus came. There's reason God is giving us hope, joy, peace and grace.

"For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people." - Titus 2:11

Prayers to everyone out there.

friday the 14th

Was reading some worship forum.. and i copy/quote a person who wrote this comment that I thought most worship leaders should ponder about.

I don't understand why people criticize chords, melodies, and word choices in this forum. It is not our job as worship leaders in the church who may or may not choose to use this piece of music to criticize the writers for their choices. (If you can do better, write your own. Or, simply don't use this song.)
As worship leaders, it is our job to decide for our congregations
1) Is the song sound in its theology? and
2) Is it appropriate for my congregation (singability, style, etc.)?
A song might be amazing both lyrically and stylistically, but not be right for my church. Conversely, I might think a song is "boring" but it could be powerful for my congregation when used in the right spot. What we choose to sing in our churches should not always be about what we like or dislike.

I always remember advice given to me by

my mentor many years ago when listening to a new song to determine whether or not it could be used in my church: listen to it at least 5 times before making a decision. A song you might immediately write off could grow on you over time and become a mainstay of your worship service. (Yes, I have experienced this.) You just never know, and every song deserves a chance. These people are writing for reasons that are bigger than you and me. They are writing and sharing their songs with us because God has given them a gift and they are compelled to use it for His glory. These songs glorify God - not the writer. When I think of it that way, it makes me less likely to level criticism, because I'm actually criticizing God. If He is inspiring the music, then it's His and we must be careful to remember to view it as such whether we like the song or not.

So true. May God filled us with wisdom as we prepare our worship sessions.

24/7 worship

Today was reading a devotional article by Nicky Gumble on his website, he was sharing from Revelation 4:1-11.

Was reminded how awesome worship is in heaven. 24/7... now that's a big WOW!

Revelation is always about vision.. imagination can only take us far as we could. No one really can know what's really gonna happen, but what is certain, heaven is an awesome place.

And I always have this thought that how awesome when we all in heaven...gathered on the same platform with all the 'famous' worship leaders like Tim Hughes, Chris Tomlin, Paul Baloche, Darlene.. all there to sing and worship God. WOW. that's one big concert there.

He indeed display His majesty for the beginning till the end :- from Genesis till Revelation.

Even in that reading, it shows the majesty of our God.

So.. better get use to worship sessions coz in heaven, we are doing it 24/7.

"Lord, thank you that we don’t have to wait until the new heaven and the new earth to worship you.  Thank you that we can have a foretaste of worship now.  Help us to worship you today and every day for you are worthy, our Lord and our God, to receive glory, honour and power."

skill.. so?

Pardon me for little personal worship reflections or sharing from me. I know I only been sharing songs and song list only but I try my best to share more here.

Recently, I been taking a lot of time to reflect about the vision and direction I want for my worship team. I listed lots of stuff... then came to one particular point that got me pondering.

That is being skillful.

That brings lots of question in my mind.

Being pondering on few verses about giving my best to Lord. Singing and playing skillfully well.

So if someone doesn't sings well, will God "accepts" his worship? He sings from his heart right? We are not here to judge someone's worship or some team's worship... aren't we?

Then here is another situation. If the team just play "good music" but not worshipful, we failed too.

But is skillful important? Yes.

God bless each one of us with skills so we should honor Him with it. Doesn't matter if it is one or ten skills, as long as we use it for Him, I believe He will bless us and guide us more. Refer to Parable of talents.

What I learnt from there is the matter of heart when we have the gifts/skill from God.

I think the matter is finding the balance. And also giving the best to the Lord from the heart.

So encourage everyone to sharpen your skills so we can give our best to the Lord, who deserves the best.

[song sharing] In Christ Alone by Owl City

There is this song written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend was made popular few months ago by Adam Young aka Owl City. He decided to record this song after one of his devotional reflection.

Here is what he have to say (taken from online article) :-

"Something about this song makes me bawl like a baby," Young wrote. "If I were to count on one hand, the number of songs that have ever deeply moved me, this one would take the cake. Last night I probably spent more time actually crying at the piano than I did recording it. Such are the secret confessions of a shy boy from Minnesota . . .

"As I’m so often reminded what a priceless gift my life is, I ache with everything in me to make it count, so that when I finally cross the finish line, I’ll hear the words, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'"

Young also noted that the spiritual meat of the song is not "intended to be 'crammed down the throat,' if you will. That is not my intention. This is what I wholeheartedly believe, and to that belief, I remain steadfast until He returns or calls me home."

I am truly blessed by his version. Am blessed to know an artist like him also able to use music to speak his faith.

Indeed in Christ alone, I will trust.

1st week of December marks the beginning of Advent week. Usually it starts 4 weeks before Christmas so this year, it begins this week.

Advent is observed in most church settings to reflect the 1st coming of Christ (as Saviour) and also the 2nd coming of Christ (as Judge). At this period, some of our songs will reflect that, which also means some of the Christmas carols being sung.

So yes, Christmas is more than just being merry and happy. It's all about HIM :)

Advent

Sorry about lack of articles lately, been busy to sitdown and really share my devotional thoughts. I know I been sharing songs instead, well, just to keep things alive and yea, share some good stuff.

Just a short sharing about what advent is all about..

Advent usually observed in many churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Jesus at Christmas

The theme of readings and teachings during Advent is often to prepare for the Second Coming while commemorating the First Coming of Christ at Christmas. With the view of directing the thoughts of Christians to the first coming of Jesus Christ as savior and to his second coming as judge, special readings are prescribed for each of the four Sundays in Advent. Same goes with the worship songs usually.

Advent usually goes on for 4 weeks before Christmas so this year it begins on 1st-2nd Dec weekend.

So.. hopefully this season prepares everyone for Christmas as it is all about JESUS!
